| Description: | Shrub or small tree up to c. 5 m tall with a rather gnarled and crooked stem; bark dark grey, rough and vertically fissured. Leaves alternate, elliptic to obovate, up to 13 cm long, rounded at the apex tapering at the base; upper surface rough, sparsely hairy; veins distinctly sunken; more densely hairy with raised veins beneath; margin sharply serrate; petiole up to 15 mm long, hairy. Inflorescences in few-flowered clusters, terminal and in the upper leaf axils. Petals 4, white; stamens yellow, numerous. Fruit consisting of 4 red carpels, held in the remains of the calyx, thinly hairy, spine-tipped. |
