Description:
Small tree to about 12 m tall. Bark rough and fissured. Leaves narrowly lanceolate to oblong, 20–120 mm long, somewhat leathery, discolorous, pale greyish green beneath, hairless except on the midrib beneath; margin entire; petioles 5–10 mm long, pubescent or hairless, often dark purple-red. Inflorescences 15–30–flowered racemes, 100–150 mm long; pedicels 2–6 mm long; peduncles and pedicels normally pubescent, rarely hairless. Bracts at the base of the pedicel, broadly to narrowly ovate, 3–5 mm long, pubescent. Calyx segments 5, fused for about 1/3 of their length, triangular, c. 2·5 mm long, shortly and rather sparsely pubescent on the outer surface, margins densely ciliate. Corolla obconical to slightly urceolate, hairless, 8–10 mm long, pale green tinged pink or red or yellow to creamy-white, lobes 5, small, triangular. Ripe capsule 5–7 mm in diameter splitting into 4 valves.
Notes:
Derivation of specific name: salicifolia: with leaves like a Salix (willow).
Habitat: At margins of evergreen forest, in riverine forest at higher altitudes and occasionally in grassland.
Altitude range: 1200 - 2500 m

Worldwide distribution: In higher mountain areas of tropical africa to Malawi, Mozambique and Zambia. Also in Madagascar and Mascarene Islands.
