Description:
Shrub or small evergreen tree. Leaves alternate, leathery, very variable in shape; on young shoots oblong to oblong-linear with spiny-dentate margins; those on older branches more or less broadly obovate with margins crenate or entire. Inflorescences axillary, 3-17-flowered. Flowers greenish or yellowish-white, more or less fleshy; disk with 4-6 linear filaments on the lobes. Fruit ovoid to oblong-fusiform, 4-10 cm long, prominently 5-ribbed.

Derivation of specific name: madagascariensis: of Madagascar,where the type specimen was collected.
Habitat: In coastal scrub, mangrove swamps and fringing forest near the sea.

Worldwide distribution: Tanzania, Zanzibar, Mozambique, Comoros, Seychelles and Madagascar.
