Description:
Small to medium-sized tree. Bark grey, rough on the older trunk, peeling off the branches to reveal a yellowish layer underneath. Thorns paired at the nodes, straight, often very long (up to 15 cm). Leaves compound, large with 8-20 pairs of pinnae; leaflets pale green or yellowish-green. Flowers in axillary, globose heads, creamy-white. Pods large, thick and woody, sometimes splitting long after they have fallen and dried.
Var. sieberiana differs from var. woodii in the young branchlets being glabrous or nearly so (hairy, often densely so, in var. woodii) and the branches of the crown usually ascending (usually widely spreading in var. woodii).
Notes:
Derivation of specific name: sieberiana: after botanist FW Sieber (1789 - 1844).
Habitat: Occurring on floodplains and along rivers, occasionally in miombo woodland.
