Description:
Shrub or small bushy tree, 2-7 m tall. Bark greyish, rough and fissured, flaking in thick pieces. Leaves obovate to broadly oblanceolate, up to 6-11 cm long, with a rounded to obtuse apex, sparsely hairy below. Flowers in dense, branched axillary heads, greenish-white or cream, most parts covered in dense rusty woolly hairs. Fruit in clusters, round c. 7 mm in diameter, sometimes rusty hairy, red to black.
Notes: This is the most common and widespread subspecies in Mozambique.
Derivation of specific name: natalensis: of Natal, South Africa;
obovata: with obovate leaves.
Habitat: Often in scrub forest and thickets, less often in riverine forest, Brachystegia woodland or on termite mounds.
Altitude range: 0 - 900 m

Worldwide distribution: Kenya, Tanzania, Malawi, Mozambique and KwaZulu-Natal, Eastern Cape South Africa.
