Description:
Prostrate to erect annual herb up to 80 cm high, growing from a taproot. Stems many-branched, yellowish-green, angular, ribbed, more or less densely white strigose. Leaves pinnately 3-5-foliolate; leaflets linear to narrowly lanceolate or elliptic-oblong, 12-50 mm long, more or less densely appressed strigose; lateral leaflets often smaller; stipules lanceolate, 1-5 mm long.Flowers in racemes up to 12 cm long, sessile or with a very short peduncle up to 3 mm long. Corolla 3.5-5.5 mm long,orange-carmineto red with the standard whitish strigose on the back. Pod 11-36 mm long, reflexed, curved or straight, flat with a continuous midridge, sparsely strigose and the style base forming an apical beak.
Notes: Specimen in the images appears to be a first record for the Gaza-Inhambane Division.
Derivation of specific name: charlieriana: after Captain H.A. Charlier (?-1887), Director of the German company dealing with administration of South-West Africa (now Namibia).
sessilis: sessile, without a stalk, referring to the inflorescences.
Habitat: In low-altitude woodland mopane woodland and scrub.
Altitude range: 0 - 400 m
Flowering time:
Worldwide distribution: Coastal areas from Somalia to KwaZulu-Natal South Africa and inland in Southeastern Zimbabwe and Limpopo, Mpumalanga South Africa. Also in Benin where it is probably introduced.
