Description:
Robust perennial herb, growing from an extensive underground rhizome, c. 8 mm in diameter. Leafy shoots up to 1.5 m tall. Flowers pale mauve to almost white, with a yellow patch at the base of the lip. Fruit ovoid, up to 10 cm long, beaked with the remains of the calyx tube.

Derivation of specific name: alboviolaceum: whitish-purple.
Habitat: In moist woodland or wooded grassland, usually near the margins with forest.
Altitude range: (metres) 40 - 1400 m

Worldwide distribution: Widespread in tropical Africa as far as Angola, Zambia and Mozambique.
