Description:
Ascending to somewhat scrambling perennial herb up to 2 m tall. Stems quadrangular, branched, often purplish, pubescent with more or less spreading, sometimes purple, hairs. Leaves triangular to ovate, 2-11 cm long, pubescent and with red sessile glands, base often running down the petiole; margin with large rounded teeth, sometimes weakly rolled under; petiole 10-60 mm long. Inflorescence lax with 10-30-flowered verticils, 5-40 mm apart; pedicels 5-13 mm long. Calyx 2-3 mm long in flower, pubescent and with red sessile glands. Corolla blue to deep purple, 7-20 mm long, pubescent on the lobes and with red sessile glands; tube 4-7 mm long, S-shaped; upper lip erect, shorter than lower lip; lower lip 4-13 mm long, deeply boat-shaped, enclosing the stamens.

Worldwide distribution: DRC, Burundi, Rwanda, Uganda, Sudan, Ethiopia, Kenya, Tanzania, Malawi, Mozambique and South Africa.
