Description of the genus

Shrubs or small trees. Leaves opposite or whorled; lamina long-acuminate, often with domatia; petiole flattened, channelled. Inflorescences axillary or terminal, reduced (in ours) to 1-3 flowers in each axil. Flowers bisexual, heterostylous. Calyx short, dentate or lobed. Corolla salver-shaped, white to cream, densely hairy in the upper half within. Ovary 2-3-locular; ovules numerous in each loculus. Fruit a spherical berry. Seeds numerous.

Worldwide: c. 25 species in tropical Africa

Mozambique: 2 taxa.
