Description of the genus

Prostrate dioecious perennial herbs (in ours) with annual stems arising from tubers. Leaves simple. Tendrils consisting of weak spines. Flowers yellow. Male flowers solitary or in fascicles; petals 5; stamens 3. Female flowers solitary; ovary spiny. Fruit ellipsoid to subspherical, indehiscent, bearing many stout conical spines.

Worldwide: 2 species in southern Africa

Mozambique: 1 taxon.
