Description of the genus

Dioecious climbing perennials. Tendrils simple or proximally 2-fid. Leaves simple, lobed. Flowers creamy-white to deep orange-yellow. Corolla 5-lobed. Stamens usually 3, usually all 2-thecous. Female flowers solitary or rarely racemose; ovary smooth; stigma 3-lobed. Fruit spherical, ellipsoid or oblong, red when mature. Style 1.

Worldwide: 30 species in tropical and South Africa, one extending to Malesia

Mozambique: 9 taxa.
