Description of the genus

Annual (in ours). Inflorescence of 1-many subdigitate racemes. Spikelets all alike or nearly so, paired, one sessile, one pedicellate, dorsally flattened with an obtuse callus. Rhachis internodes and pedicels slender, filiform to clavate. Lower glume with a median groove on the back, sharply inflexed on the flanks, acute to 2-dentate. Upper glume often awned. Lower floret variable, often male or rudimentary. Upper lemma entire to 2-fid with a glabrous awn.

Worldwide: 15 species in the Old World tropics and warm regions, especially in Africa
