Description of the genus

Annual or perennial, often epiphytic, herbs. Stipules 0. Leaves whorled, opposite or alternate, ± fleshy. Inflorescence of solitary or crowded spikes. Flowers bisexual. Sepals 0. Petals 0. Stamens 2. Stigma 1. Ovary sessile. Fruit a 1-seeded drupe.

Worldwide: 100 species in tropical and warm areas, especially America

Mozambique: 6 taxa.
