Description of the genus

Small hemiparasitic shrubs with single haustorial attachment. Leaves opposite, subopposite or ternate, hairless, sometimes papillose. Flowers in umbels, 5-merous. Corolla mainly red, splitting unilaterally; the apical swelling of the flower bud indicating maturity by changing to a darker colour; lobes coiled outwards at anthesis. Anthers fitting under the top-shaped to peltate stigma. Fruit a red to yellow berry. Seeds brightly coloured.

Worldwide: 13 species in tropical Africa
