Description of the genus

Shrubs or small trees. Stipules deciduous. Leaves alternate, or rarely, opposite or whorled. Inflorescence simple or compound, terminal or axillary. Flowers actinomorphic or slightly zygomorphic. Sepals ± equal; margin ciliolate. Petals subequal (no petal spurred), often ± reflexed, white or greenish-white to yellow or red. Stamens free or ± united to form a tube. Fruit a capsule with 3 valves, rarely subfleshy and indehiscent. Seeds usually glabrous and smooth.

Worldwide: c. 200 species in the tropics

Mozambique: 7 taxa.
