Perennial herb, up to c. 1 m tall, growing from a woodly rootstock. Stems 1-several unbranched or sparingly branched, more or less densely hairy. Leaves sessile or very shortly petiolate, elliptic-(ob)lanceolate, up to 5 × 2 cm, dull green densely hairy on both surfaces, particularly when young; margin entire. Flowers in axillary clusters, yellowish-green, unisexual on different plants. Fruit round, c. 5 mm in diameter, pale green, pubescent. |
Notes:

This species is generally similar to Clutia swynnertonii, which is a much more robust, much-branched shrub, up to c. 4 m tall. |
