Description:
Aquatic perennial herb. Stolons tufted, numerous, floating. Leaves circular, 5-15 cm in diameter, rarely larger. Flowers white with a yellow tube, lobes c. twice as long as the tube; sepals spreading, later closing around the capsule. Capsule ovoid, 4-5 mm in diameter, shorter than the calyx.
Notes:
Derivation of specific name: indica: of India;
occidentalis: Western.
Habitat: In lakes, pools, swamps and rivers, sometimes in seasonal pools as it is capable of withstanding periods of drying up.
Altitude range: Up to 1650 m
Flowering time:Oct - May
Worldwide distribution: Pantropical
