Description:
Shrub or small, spreading tree. Leaves in whorls of 3 on short, rigid side branchlets, oblanceolate to obovate, roughly hairy on both surfaces; hair-tuft domatia present. Flowers solitary at the ends of the branchlets, white, turning yellow when fading, sweetly scented. Fruit ovoid, 5 × 3.5 cm, velvety, yellowish brown, crowned with the remains of the calyx.
Notes:
Derivation of specific name: ternifolia: leaves in threes; jovis-tonantis: "Jupiter the Thunderer", meaning obscure; goetzei: after Walter Goetze (1872-1899), German naturalist, explorer, photographer and collector in Tanzania.
Habitat: In wooded grassland, on kopjes, and along streams and vleis, often on termite mounds.
