Description:
Shrub or small tree. Leaves alternate, mostly crowded towards the ends of branches, sessile, narrowly elliptic, oblong or oblanceolate, 7-25 cm long, bluish-green to light green, with a pinkish midrib, hairless. Flowerheads 4-6.5 cm in diameter; bracts cream or pinkish inside, hairless or with scattered whitish hairs; flowers cream or pinkish with the perianth limb 10-14 mm long.
Notes: This species differs from subsp. gazenzis by smaller flowerheads, shorter perianths and its lower altitude not montane habitat preference.
Derivation of specific name: caffra: of Caffraria, a historic reference to South Africa.
Habitat: On dry rocky ridges and hillsides.
