Description:
Erect perennial, sometimes annual herb, usually up to 60 cm tall. Leaves alternate, 2-6.5 cm long, in this variety more or less broadly elliptic, hairless or sparsely pubescent; margin shallowly serrate. Flowers solitary in the leaf axils on a pedicel up to 1.8 mm long, rose-pink to violet or bluish, normally with darker streaks and white in the centre; lower petal up to 2 × 2 cm, almost square with a short blunt spur. Fruit a 3-sided capsule, 5-8 mm long, pale yellow, hairless.
Notes: This species rarely grows into a spindly shub up to 3 m tall
Derivation of specific name: latifolius: with broad leaves.
Habitat: Along forest margins, in woodland and grassland.
Altitude range: Up to 500 m
Flowering time:All year
Worldwide distribution: West and Central Africa, southern Tanzania and Mozambique.
