Description:	Shrub 2–4 m high sometimes climbing; branchlets pubescent and covered with small scales when young, hairless and whitish when older. Leaves opposite, subopposite or 3-whorled, oblong-elliptic, up to 14·5 cm long, dark-green and shiny, leathery, covered with small scales but only inconspicuously when young; lateral veins 5–12 pairs, very prominent beneath; petiole up to 5 mm long, stout. Inflorescences in subcapitate axillary spikes, mostly c. 2 cm long; peduncles 1–1·5 cm long, with small scales and rufous-pubescent, stout and becoming very woody at the fruiting stage. Sepals scarcely developed. Petals obovate, 1.5 mm long, ciliate at the apex. Fruit 4-angled or very narrowly 4-winged, 1·3–2·5 cm long, hairless, with stiff wings up to 1 mm. broad, apical peg scarcely developed.
