Description:
Erect perennial, 60-90 cm high, growing from a corm. Leaves 5-6, lower 3 more or less basal and larger, up to about the base of the spike, narrowly lanceolate to linear, 205 mm wide. Flowering spike 4-8-flowered, erect. Flowers whitish, cream to pale pink, normally heavily veined red or purple, veining rarely inconspicuous or absent and flowers all whithish, cream or all red or purple. The lower 3 tepals each with a broad yellowish mark in the lower part.
Notes: The striking flowers are normally very heavily veined red to purple but rarer formes without the conspicuous veining also occur.
Derivation of specific name: erectiflorus: with erect flowers, referring to the stiffly erect flowering spikes, unlike most species which have an inflorescence somewhat inclined towards the ground.
Habitat: In deciduous woodland, often in rocky, hilly areas.
