Description:
Tufted perennial grass, 30 - 150 cm tall; basal leaf sheaths becoming fibrous and usually woolly-tomentose. Culms unbranched. Inflorescence a contracted or open panicle, broadly ovate in outline, with long, wiry branches. Spikelets 8-14 mm long, hairless or tuberculate-setose. Inferior glume obtuse: superior glume and inferior lemma obtuse to acute. Superior lemma bidentate with teeth 0.2–1 mm. long; stamens 2. Callus 0.8–1 mm. long, narrowly oblong, 2-toothed.
Notes:
Derivation of specific name: simplex: undivided, entire (obviously not referring to the callus)
Habitat: In rocky places in open woodland but also in waterlogged soils.
Altitude range: 1000 - 2400 m
Flowering time:Nov - Mar
Worldwide distribution: Tropical and South Africa and Madagascar
Mozambique distribution: N,Z,MS
