Description:
Robust liana, up to 30 m high. Young branches reddish-brown, often coiling to aid climbing; older stems distinctly 5-angled; hooked prickles scattered along the stems. Leaves up to 25 × 15 cm with 8-15 pairs of pinnae; petiole up 6 cm long. Flowers in spherical heads forming a terminal panicle, white. Pod oblong, hard, indehiscent with a thickened margin, brown.

Habitat: In evergreen forest.
Altitude range: 450 - 1400 m
Flowering time:Oct - Dec
Worldwide distribution: From Sierra Leone to Sudan and South to Angola, eastern Zimbabwe and western Mozambique. Also in Madagascar.
